Notorious cases of corruption and incompetence - BECHTEL CASE
As a Prime-Minister, Adrian Nastase approved and personally signed a 2.5 billion $ contract (but final cost estimated by specialists as double) with the American company Bechtel International Inc for the construction of a highway, the biggest investment project since the fall of the communism. This contract was practically offered to Bechtel without a tender and without any financial contribution from Bechtel, which upset the European Union, who at the same time gave Romania a grant of over 1 billion euro. The contract was then sub-contracted to a Turkish company which in this way avoided bankruptcy. In a similar situation, the Croatian Government cancelled the contract with Bechtel, but the Romanian authorities haven’t taken any measure yet.
